The cloud names come from one amateur. Luke Howard, a London pharmacist, proposed them in 1802 and they have been in use ever since: cirrus is Latin for a curl of hair, cumulus for a heap, stratus for a layer. They combine to describe the rest of the sky, so a cumulonimbus is a heaped rain cloud.

Two of the terms are instruments in disguise. An anemometer counts wind, from the Greek anemos, and the spinning-cup version still in use was designed in 1846. The dew point is the more useful half of the humidity pair: it is the temperature at which the air has to give up its water, so once it climbs past about 65 degrees the air begins to feel heavy no matter what the thermometer says.
