Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Roman Britain, seized by raiders at about sixteen and kept as a slave in Ireland for six years herding animals, escaped home, and then chose to go back as a missionary. Almost everything reliably known about him comes from two short documents he wrote himself, one of which is an open letter complaining about a warlord who had killed his converts.

The color was blue. Saint Patrick's blue was the shade associated with him and with Irish heraldry for centuries, and green took over only through the shamrock, the united Irishmen of the 1790s and the wearing of the green that followed. The shamrock-as-Trinity story appears nowhere before the 1700s, which is roughly a thousand years after Patrick.
