The ancestor is a Russian ice slide. Wooden ramps seventy feet high, packed with ice and ridden on sledges, were a winter fixture around St Petersburg from the 1600s, and the French who copied them called the result les montagnes russes, which is still the term in French, Spanish and several other languages. Russians, confusingly, call them American mountains.

The first American coaster was a disused coal railway. The Mauch Chunk gravity line in Pennsylvania had hauled coal down a mountain by gravity and mules back up; when the mine outgrew it, the owners began selling rides down the eighteen-mile drop instead, and by the 1870s it was carrying tens of thousands of tourists a year at a nickel a head.
