The sphenodon is not a lizard, whatever it looks like. Better known as the tuatara and found only in New Zealand, it is the last survivor of an order that branched away from lizards and snakes about 250 million years ago; everything else in that group is a fossil. It also keeps a light-sensitive parietal eye on the top of its skull, visible in hatchlings before scales cover it.

The chuckwalla has a simpler trick. When threatened it wedges itself into a crack in the rock and gulps air until its body inflates, jamming itself so tightly that a predator cannot pull it out. The gavial at the other end of the list is the crocodilian with the absurd narrow snout, which is narrow for a reason: it sweeps sideways through water with very little resistance, and it eats almost nothing but fish.
