Twenty-two poets make up this list: Akhmatova, Brodsky, Keats, Mayakovsky, Pushkin, Tsvetaeva and Wordsworth. Free to print as a PDF, or play it online.

A third of the list is Russian, which makes it a rather particular collection. Pushkin, who more or less invented modern literary Russian, was shot dead in a duel at 37 over his wife's reputation. Mayakovsky shot himself at 36. Tsvetaeva hanged herself in 1941. Akhmatova outlived them all and spent years memorizing her own long poem about the purges, because writing it down would have been evidence.

Brodsky is on the list for the trial as much as the verse. Tried in Leningrad in 1964 for "social parasitism", he was asked who had authorized him to be a poet and answered that he assumed it came from God. He got five years of internal exile, was expelled from the country in 1972, and won the Nobel Prize in 1987.
