The Louvre became a museum because of a revolution. It had been a fortress, then a royal palace, and it opened to the public in 1793 with a collection that was largely the king's, seized a few months after he was executed. The idea that a national collection belongs to everyone rather than to whoever owns the building is roughly that old.

The Hermitage keeps a staff of cats, and has since Elizabeth ordered cats brought from Kazan in the 1740s to deal with rats in the Winter Palace. There are usually fifty or so, they have their own press officer, and they are the only permanent residents. Inhotim at the other end of the list is the newest idea here: a contemporary art collection in Brazil laid out across a botanical garden the size of a small town.
