The creeper, the most recognizable thing in the game, was an accident. Markus Persson was modeling a pig, swapped the height and the length by mistake, and ended up with something tall and thin standing on four short legs. He kept it, made it explode, and it became the face of the game.
Redstone is the other oddity. It is a red dust that carries a signal, and players have used it to build working calculators, clocks and memory inside a game about mining - one group built a machine that runs a playable copy of Minecraft inside Minecraft. Bedrock is the unbreakable layer at the bottom of the world, which is also why it names an edition of the game.
