It began as Decoration Day, and the name described the activity. In the years after the Civil War, communities across both the North and the South set aside a day to clear and decorate soldiers' graves with flowers; General John Logan fixed it as 30 May in 1868, choosing a date when flowers would be in bloom everywhere in the country and no particular battle had been fought.

The date moved a century later. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act shifted it to the last Monday in May from 1971, which is how it became the weekend that opens the American summer, and veterans' organizations have been trying to move it back to the thirtieth ever since on the grounds that a three-day weekend obscures the point.
