Algebra is the one word here with a travel story. It comes from al-jabr, the restoring, in the title of a book written in Baghdad around the year 820 by al-Khwarizmi; the book is about moving terms across an equals sign while keeping it balanced. His own name, worn down through Latin, is where we get the word algorithm.

Domain and range belong together and are easy to swap. The domain is everything you are allowed to put into a function; the range is everything that can come back out. The associative property is the quiet one that makes ordinary arithmetic work at all - group the numbers however you like and addition and multiplication still give the same answer.
