Two of them were built deliberately. Benevolence is Latin for wishing well, from bene and velle, and it has meant that since the 1400s. Altruism is much younger: the philosopher Auguste Comte coined it in the 1830s, borrowing an Italian legal term for other people's property, because he wanted one word for acting in someone else's interest rather than your own.

Hospitality has the strangest history here. It comes from the Latin hospes, a guest, which also gave English hostel, hotel and host. The same root produced hostis, a stranger, and then an enemy, and then hostile. One word for the person at your door split into welcome and threat.
