Japanese Mountains Word Search

Printable Japanese Mountains Word Search

Sixty-four Japanese peaks make up this list, from Adatara and Asama to Kitadake, Tateyama, Yarigatake and Zao. Free to print as a PDF, or play it online.

The endings do the same work as the word mountain. A name ending in -dake or -gatake is a peak, -san or -zan is a mountain, and -yama is the same word read the other way, so Tateyama and Tateshina and Hakusan are all saying it in the name itself. Repeating it in English, as Mount Yarigatake, technically says mountain twice.

Most of this list comes from one book. In 1964 the writer Kyuya Fukada published One Hundred Famous Japanese Mountains, choosing each for its history, its shape and its character rather than its height, and climbing all hundred has been a national project ever since. The country is about three quarters mountain, so the shortlist mattered.

Take the PDF to a geography class, or climb a different set online each round.
