Santorini is not really an island so much as what is left of one. Around 1600 BC the volcano beneath it erupted and the center of the island collapsed into the sea, leaving the crescent of cliffs that people photograph today; the villages sit on the rim of the crater, looking down into it.

The Maldives has the opposite problem. It is the lowest country on Earth, averaging about a meter and a half above sea level with no natural ground anywhere much higher, which makes it the place most often cited in arguments about rising seas. The Galapagos is on the list for a different reason: the finches Darwin collected there in 1835 became the worked example for natural selection.
