Everything in this grid is fruit that ended up as pudding - apple pie, berry cobbler, cherry turnover, fruit trifle, banana bread, lemon bar and peach melba.

The names come from how they are built rather than what is in them. A cobbler has a dropped biscuit topping, a crumble has rubbed butter and flour, a crisp adds oats, and a pie has pastry underneath as well as on top. Peach melba was invented by Escoffier for a singer, and banana bread spread in the 1930s because baking soda was cheap and nobody threw fruit away.

Most of these exist because fruit does not keep. A cobbler, a crumble and a tart are all ways of using fruit that has gone slightly too far to eat raw, and the sugar and heat cover the difference. That is also why they are seasonal in a way cakes are not.
