The blitz is named after the German blitzkrieg, lightning war, and it means what it sounds like: send more rushers than the offense can block and get there before the throw. The audible is the answer to it - the quarterback reads the defense at the line and changes the play out loud, which is why crowd noise on third down is a genuine tactic and not just enthusiasm.

A safety is the strangest two points in the sport. The defense scores it by tackling the ball carrier in his own end zone, and the team that just conceded then has to kick the ball back. Heisman on this list is John Heisman, a coach who pushed to get the forward pass legalized and has had the sport's best-known trophy named after him since 1936.
