Food Word Search
A general food grid, heavy on the things people actually order: cheeseburger, fried chicken, french fries, fajita, filet mignon, pasta, sushi and taco.
Several of the names travel further than the dish. Filet mignon is French for a small, tender cut and has nothing to do with any one country's cooking. The fajita started as a cheap skirt steak given to ranch hands in south Texas. The hamburger is named after Hamburg, and the sandwich after a man who did not want to leave a card table.
A few of these names are in the wrong language entirely. Chow mein and chop suey are American inventions with Chinese names, the fortune cookie is Japanese-American, and the fajita became a restaurant dish only in the 1970s after decades as a ranch worker's lunch.
