The lionfish is the one with a story attached. Native to the Pacific, it turned up off Florida in the 1980s, almost certainly released from aquariums, and has spread through the Caribbean with no predator willing to take on its venomous spines. Divers now hunt it deliberately, and several governments have run campaigns to get people to eat it.

Two others are old. Sturgeon have been around in much their present shape for some two hundred million years, wear rows of bony plates instead of scales, and can live past a century, which is part of why overfishing them for caviar was so difficult to reverse. The sawfish is a ray rather than a shark, and the teeth along its blade are modified scales, not teeth at all.
