Two of the most famous books came out of constraints rather than inspiration. The Cat in the Hat was written from a list of words a first-grader was supposed to know, after an editor complained that school readers were so dull children would not open them; Geisel used 236 of them. Green Eggs and Ham came from a bet with his publisher that he could not write a book using fifty words or fewer. He could, and he did, and it has sold tens of millions of copies.

The name is also not quite what it looks like. Seuss was his mother's maiden name and it is German, pronounced closer to "soice"; he started using it on humor pieces at Dartmouth after being banned from writing for the college magazine, and only later gave in to the American pronunciation everyone had settled on.
