Twenty-six color names, and about half of them are named after the thing they came from. Magenta is a dye named for a battle fought in 1859, Bronze and Gold are metals, Chocolate and Salmon are food, and Lilac, Violet and Olive are plants.

Languages add color words in a surprisingly fixed order - black and white first, then red, then green and yellow, then blue. Blue is one of the last to arrive almost everywhere, which is why ancient writers describe the sea by how it moves rather than by its color.

Two spellings in this grid are worth a second look. Fuchsia is named after the botanist Leonhard Fuchs and is misspelled more often than almost any other color word. Beige originally described undyed wool, straight off the sheep.
