The endings repeat across the map once you notice them. The Sanskrit "-pur" means town, so Jaipur is Jai's town, after Jai Singh II who founded it in 1727, and Kanpur and Nagpur are built the same way. The Persian "-abad" means a settled place, which is how Hyderabad and Ahmedabad got their names, each from the ruler who established it.

Jaipur is also the pink one. The whole walled city was painted terracotta in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, and buildings there are still required to keep the color. Varanasi at the other end of the list is among the oldest continuously lived-in cities anywhere, and Agra holds the Taj Mahal, which took about twenty years and was finished around 1653.
