Brasilia did not exist in 1956. The capital was moved inland from Rio on purpose, to pull development away from the coast, and Lucio Costa laid the city out in a shape usually described as an aeroplane while Oscar Niemeyer designed the buildings along it. It was inaugurated in 1960, took forty-one months to build, and is one of the very few twentieth-century places on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Manaus is the opposite kind of city: a thousand miles up the Amazon, rich beyond sense during the rubber boom of the 1890s, and it built an opera house out of Italian marble and French glass shipped up the river to prove it. The boom ended when seeds smuggled to Southeast Asia broke the monopoly, and the opera house is still there.
