The Siamese is a lesson in chemistry rather than breeding. Its color comes from an enzyme that only works below a certain temperature, so the pigment develops on the cool parts of the body, the ears, face, paws and tail, and nowhere else. Kittens are born almost white because the womb is warm, and a Siamese kept somewhere cold will darken all over.

The Manx has no tail for a less happy reason. The same mutation that shortens the spine is lethal when a kitten inherits it from both parents, so every litter is a partial one, and cats with the shortest spines can have serious problems with them. The Sphynx, by contrast, is not really hairless at all: it is covered in a fine down, which is why one feels like a warm peach.
