The word says what the meal is for. To breakfast is to break the fast of the night, and the phrase has been used that way in English since the 1400s, when the first meal of the day was often taken several hours after waking.

Two items here were invented at the same American sanitarium. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Will were running a health institute in Battle Creek, Michigan when they left boiled wheat out too long, rolled it anyway and found it broke into flakes rather than sheets. Granola came out of the same movement a few decades earlier, under the name granula, and the lawsuit over that name is why the version we eat is spelled with an o.
