Three of them are foreign words that were never translated. A duvet is French for down, meaning the feathers inside it. A mattress comes from the Arabic matrah, the place where something is thrown, and arrived in Europe along with the idea of sleeping on cushions laid on the floor. A wardrobe is Old French for guarding robes, and it named a room long before it named a piece of furniture.

The alarm clock has a famously unhelpful first version. Levi Hutchins, a New Hampshire clockmaker, built one for himself in 1787 that could not be set at all: it rang at four in the morning and at no other hour, because four was when he needed to get up. Adjustable alarms took another fifty years to arrive.
