The flush toilet only became usable because of a bend in a pipe. Sir John Harington built a flushing device for Elizabeth I in 1596 and it went nowhere, because the smell came straight back up. Alexander Cumming patented the S-bend in 1775: a curve that holds a plug of water permanently, sealing the room off from the drain. Every toilet, sink and shower in the house still relies on it.

The cabinet is called a vanity for the obvious reason and has been since the 1930s, when the dressing table moved from the bedroom into the bathroom. Toothpaste in a squeezable tube is about the same age as the S-bend's widespread adoption in homes, arriving in 1892; before that it was sold as powder in a jar that the whole family dipped a brush into.
