The ten-foot rim is an accident nobody ever corrected. James Naismith nailed two peach baskets to the balcony rail of a gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts in December 1891, and the rail happened to be ten feet off the floor. Players have grown a great deal since and the height has not moved an inch.

Dribbling was not in the original thirteen rules at all. You passed from wherever you caught the ball, and the dribble came in later as a way out of trouble. The dunk has a stranger record: college basketball banned it from 1967 to 1976, in a rule aimed so squarely at one player that everybody simply called it the Lew Alcindor rule.
