Several names are older than the cities they now play in. The Dodgers were the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, after pedestrians skipping out of the way of streetcars, and kept the name across the country to Los Angeles. The Lakers did the same thing in reverse, carrying Minnesota's lakes to a city with none, which is why team names so rarely describe where they are.

The newest name on the list arrived in 2021, when Cleveland became the Guardians after the stone figures on the Hope Memorial Bridge beside the ballpark. The oldest continuous one is the Braves, founded in Boston in 1871 and now in Atlanta by way of Milwaukee, making them the only club to have played every season since the National League began.
