The dopp kit takes its name from Charles Doppelt, a Chicago leather worker who made a toiletry case in 1919 that the US Army bought in quantity during the Second World War. The haversack is German, Hafersack, an oat sack, because it was originally what you carried the horse's feed in.

The randoseru is the odd one out and the most durable. It is the stiff leather backpack Japanese children carry through all six years of elementary school, the name borrowed from the Dutch ransel, and it is built to last every one of those years. Families commonly spend several hundred dollars on one, and grandparents traditionally pay.
