The shower is a young custom. Gifts for a new mother are ancient, but the party as Americans hold it, with invitations, games and a pile of presents opened in front of everyone, took its present shape after the Second World War. The name comes from the older idea of showering somebody with gifts, and much of the world still has no equivalent event.

Onesie is a brand rather than an ordinary word. Gerber trademarked it in 1982 for the snap-bottom bodysuit and defends it, which is why catalogs say bodysuit while everyone else says onesie. Swaddling sits at the opposite end of the age range: wrapped infants turn up on Greek votive figures and in the nativity story, the practice fell out of favor during the 1800s, and hospitals have brought it back over the last thirty years.
