Five letters is a useful size for a reader still building speed. Most of these words run to one syllable, and the list is thick with the letter pairs that have to be learned as a unit rather than sounded out one at a time: the br in bread, the cl in cloud, the sh in sheep, the gr in grass. Several others end in the silent e that reaches back and changes the vowel in front of it - smile, stone, horse, house, mouse.

Three of them carry a letter nobody says any more, and all three were once spoken aloud. The k in knife was pronounced until around the 1600s, which is why the word is spelled the way it is rather than the way it sounds. The w in write went the same way at about the same time. And the gh in laugh was once the sound still heard in the Scottish loch, which English lost and then patched over with an f.
